In November 2019, Venice suffered its highest floods since 1966, causing an estimated $1.1 billion worth of damage. CGTN Europe was in the city when the storms hit, reporting from the San Marco Piazza in knee-high water.

Thousands of volunteers sprang to action to clean up the city. Despite Venetians' camaraderie, greater work is needed if the lagoon city is to be protected from the annual floods.

11 MONTHS LATER

Seventeen years after work first began on the MOSE Project, it was successfully tested in July and authorities say the flood-defence system is now ready to protect the floating city.

"We all have to hope that it works"
Giuseppe Conte, Italy's prime minister

Venetians are not only still recovering from last year's flood, but they have also contended with the coronavirus crisis. Now, as the winter approaches, the city's beleaguered residents wait anxiously hoping MOSE will hold.
