VISUALIZING THE PANDEMIC IN EUROPE

By Patrick Atack

COVID-19 case numbers in Europe were small until March, when infections mounted across the continent. Much of the media focus was centered on Italy and Spain, but as the chart above shows, other nations were equally - if not worse - affected.

Since then, the virus has spread unevenly around the continent, with spikes occurring in different areas at different times.

The summer was generally a calm period in the European pandemic, though France continued to experience peaks during June. The cases then began to rise again in July, with Belgium seeing significant jumps.

Moving into the fall, we have seen swathes of infections across the continent - although the country many focused on as the epicenter of the European pandemic, Italy, is not seeing the steep rise in cases suffered by neighboring Czechia, Austria and Hungary.
